Beara 400 – by Bobby Newport

Gale force headwind and driving rain for 225kms, what more could you ask for?

Eight cyclists started at 4am from Midleton. Within 10kms the group was spilt in two and by 30kms everyone was on their own. The route passed through Rathcormac, Mallow and Millstream before getting to the start of the Beara Peninsula at Glengarriff. From there the rain and wind got worse. I had lost my glasses en route and then it was hard to open by eyes.

Castletownbere and over Healy’s Pass, the descent had more twists than a can of spaghetti. Back then to Glengarriff, 290 kms done – only 120 to the finish. From here mostly a tailwind to Midleton (there is a God). Chinese ,shower and in bed by 12 midnight.

Tough day in the saddle. Next for me will be 600kms on the 4th June.

I wonder is there tablets for my condition.
